Nutrition can make or break you in the mountains. Over the years I have been able to get comfortable with my body being a fat burning machine.

To efficiently burn fat you have to stay hydrated. With hydration you can continue to move on through your day without reaching for sugar filled snacks or bars. Pushing through this wall will help turn you into a fat burning pro. You will be able to get that “second win” many of us have heard about and finish the tasks at hand. That may be finishing your work in the office or at home but also when you are ready it may be getting back to camp after a huge expedition reaching an obscure and beautiful peak in the backcountry.

It doesn't matter where you are in your journey, if you are getting in shape in the city to be able to venture out into the mountains or you have already gotten comfortable in the backcountry. Harnessing and practicing the skill of burning fat can help you achieve your goals both in how you look, how you feel, and how you perform.

One thing that can happen when you are getting into this fat burning adventure is you can deplete your electrolytes. These can be replaced in your water with supplemental packets. But be cautious, not all supplements are created equally. Many are packed full of sugar and if your goal is to be able to burn fat and be in an aerobic state you must avoid spiking your blood sugar with these simple carbohydrates.

This leads us into the age old myth that is still plaguing our country. Fat is not what makes you fat. It is simple empty carbohydrates that have ruined the health of our nation. Obviously fat is packed with energy / calories but they are also utilized for a myriad of needs that the body has. Our cells are all encapsulated in a lipid bi-layer. Which is fat. Unsaturated fats from whole food sources is the healthiest source. Also we must not completely shy away from saturated fats as they are essential to hormone production like testosterone.
